Carly in London: Day 8 – August 2
THREE-PEAT. I probably could let that phrase alone be my blog tonight, but that wouldn’t be as much fun. Obviously, I couldn’t be more excited for Gabby; and I am so thrilled to be here in London having the chance to witness magical moments like tonight! Gabby – welcome to the club!
I watched tonight’s session with Mary Lou Retton and Steve Penny, and am certain my voice will be hoarse tomorrow after two hours of screaming and cheering for both Gabby and Aly. I found myself “coaching” the two of them from the stands throughout the meet tonight – just the little things that I can still hear Evgeny saying aloud while I was on the podium. Tonight certainly brought back a lot of memories, and at the moment we realized the gold was within Gabby’s reach, we all lost it!
I’m so proud of the confidence and commitment both Aly and Gabby showed on the floor tonight – they both came out for the fight, and have certainly showed the whole world what they are made of. My heart goes out to Aly, but she finished third in my book and certainly has much to be proud of.
As for Gabby, I’m so excited for the insanity that will come out of this, and all the opportunities she will have on this amazing journey ahead of her. This is one crown she will get to wear forever and I hope she lets it all soak in and can really enjoy the ride!
Earlier on the TODAY show, we talked about this outcome, and while I didn’t want to jinx it, I definitely predicted this three-peat would happen!
When I finished that interview this morning, I had the chance to meet Shaun White, which was amazing – and finally, after being here for a week, I got my picture with Matt Lauer! I’ll be back on TODAY in the morning, celebrating the gold with Gabby, and then will head back one more day on Saturday for the Weekend TODAY edition.
Earlier this morning, I was also a guest on the Kidd Kraddick radio program, which is a Dallas-based station that is nationally syndicated. This is the station where I did my first radio interview upon returning home from Athens in 2004, so it was really fun to catch up with everyone in their London studio. You can check out the interview here.
I can’t believe I’ve been here eight days already, but I’m loving every minute of it. Before event finals begin on Sunday I’m hoping to visit some of the London tourist stops on my wish list, so check back this weekend for more from my video blog series on behalf of the Kellogg’s Tour!
